The Township of Alnwick/Haldimand is responsible for the maintenance and restoration of six (6) “abandoned” pioneer cemeteries in the Township, under provisions of the Ontario Cemeteries Act. The Heritage budget encompasses the yearly maintenance and restoration of the gravestones.
The six Heritage Cemeteries are:
- Academy Hill Cemetery
- Bowmanton Pioneer Cemetery
- Gilliland Pioneer Cemetery
- Wesleyan Methodist Cemetery
- Russ Creek Pioneer Cemetery
- Kelley Pioneer Cemetery
Visitors are welcome to the cemeteries, but are asked to take great care and not, in any way, interfere with the stones. Please appreciate that the text on the stones is weathered and difficult to read. Many stones cannot be found or have broken beyond recognition.
