Beacons of Light for British Home Children and Child Migrants – September 28,
On September 28, the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand will participate in the Beacons of Light International Tribute in honour of British Home Child Day, illuminating Township floodlights as a symbol of remembrance, recognition and hope.
Each year, Home Children Canada hosts this powerful tribute, bringing communities together across Canada and around the world. Landmarks, buildings and private residences are illuminated in recognition of the more than 100,000 British Home Children who were sent to Canada. These lights honour their resilience and contributions while bringing awareness to stories that remained hidden for generations.
Through its participation, the Township joins a growing number of communities committed to remembrance, education and preserving this important part of Canada's history. The Township also supports continued provincial recognition and respectfully urges the Government of Canada to issue a formal public apology to British Home Children, Child Migrants and their families for Canada's role in the British Child Migration Scheme.
