Marriage Licenses & Ceremonies

The Township of Alnwick/Haldimand issues Marriage Licenses at the Municipal Office, located at 10836 County Road 2, Grafton Ontario. To apply for a marriage license you must complete the Marriage License Application Form. The application typically takes about 20 minutes to complete.

A marriage license can only be issued to the applicants named on the application. Only one applicant is required to attend the Municipal Office to obtain the license; however, they must bring two (2) pieces of valid identification for both applicants.

When submitting your application, you must provide the date and location of your marriage ceremony. Once issued, a marriage license is valid for 90 days and may be used anywhere in Ontario.

Applying for a Marriage License

  • Please bring the completed form with two (2) sets of ID for each applicant. One (1) ID must provide your identity and the second must be photo ID.

    Valid ID:

    • Birth Certificate (including any change of name certificates)

    • Valid Passport

    • Record of Immigrant Landing

    • Canadian Citizenship Card

    • Canadian Permanent Resident Card

    Valid Photo ID

    • Valid Driver’s License

    • Valid Passport**

    • Ontario Photo Card

    • Native Status Card

    • Nexus Card

    ** If you use a valid passport as your proof of ID, you can not use it as your photo ID.

    Please note we do not accept photocopies.

  • You must translate all documents that are in a language other than English or French by a certified translator.

    Interpreters

    If you do not understand or read English, you must bring your own interpreter. The interpreter must also present two (2) pieces of identification (one photo identification, one other) and sign an affidavit of interpreter.

  • The minimum age to get married in Ontario is 16. Anyone under the age of 18 must have parental consent. Parents must sign a Consent of Parent or Guardian to Marriage Form and provide photo identification.

  • If any party to the marriage has had a Canadian Divorce, you must bring the original Certificate of Divorce with you to get a marriage license.

    You can get this certificate from the original courthouse where your divorce took place. We do not accept photocopies.

    Divorce outside of Canada

    If any party to the marriage has a previous divorce that took place outside of Canada, you will need to get approval of the foreign divorce certificate from the Office of the Registrar General. The Foreign Divorce Office needs at least four (4) weeks to process the application.

  • Marriage certificates are records of your marriage. To get a marriage certificate or for more information, please visit Ontario Marriage Certificate Online.

  • The fee for a marriage license must be paid at the time of application.

    Payment may be made by cash, debit, or cheque. Please note that Visa and Mastercard are not accepted.

Marriage Ceremonies

Civil marriage ceremonies may be held at the Township Municipal Office during regular office hours or at another Township-owned property, including parks, subject to availability and consultation with the Clerk’s Department.

At the time of booking your wedding ceremony, you will need to provide:

  • Ceremony fee

  • A valid Province of Ontario marriage license (please arrange for your license before booking)

  • A valid piece of photo ID for each partner (parental consent is required for those 16-17 years old)
